David B. South, Chairman
David B. South is President and founder of Monolithic, Inc., headquartered in Italy, Texas. In 1975, David co-invented and patented the Monolithic Dome and pioneered its development for residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial use.
The first Domes were foam-insulated, steel-reinforced concrete potato storages that could withstand tornadoes, fire, vermin and rot. Then Monolithic began expanding. They began designing and constructing Monolithic Dome homes, schools, churches, offices, sporting and event centers, theaters, bulk storages, water tanks and supermarkets. These Domes are far more sophisticated and attractive than the original potato storages, but they are equally disaster resistant and energy efficient. Monolithic Domes are now in use in 48 states and 45 countries.
Once Monolithic gained a stronger foothold in the construction industry, David began thinking about ways to share that success. He decided on two needs that Monolithic technology could decrease.
- America had a need for affordable housing for people with minimum-wage jobs. Monolithic designed Domes that could be constructed as affordable, safe, easily maintained rentals.
- Our world had a need for shelters and community buildings for the homeless, particularly in emerging nations. David and his staff developed the EcoShell, specifically for construction in temperate climates. He then founded DFTW.
