John Barbara Foundation, Inc. - Executive Summary
BURKINA FASSO – ALTERNATIVE RENEWABLE ENERGY DOME COMMUNITY PROJECT
Globally many countries are faced with challenges arising out of climate changes, increasing populations, strain on urban development, increasing health and educational demands from their citizens.
Burkina Fasso in West Africa is faced with similar critical issues especially an increasing high cost of energy.
Burkina Fasso is interested in using alternative renewable energy as possible solution to compliment their current energy system. Given the current rise in energy/ oil prices the volatility affects pricing and thus development.
The eco-friendly approach will include environmental banking options like:
Carbon credit banking
Endangered species banking
Biodiversity banking
Energy banking
Water quality banking
Water banking
The balance in environmental and economical impact to the country is important for long term success. Burkina Fasso has a policy in place that has allocated land for Tree Reforestation as a means to improve on the environment.
John Babara Foundation, Inc. believes in the eco-approach using dome homes with solar panels /windmills on top of rooftops to generate renewable energy for the country.
The Burkina Fasso Govt. will donate the land and tax incentives. This will be started in the capital city – Ouagadougou and other regional towns within the country.
Annually we expect to build 3 million homes for a period of 6 years.
The mission is to create dome home communities that will include:
Hospitals / University medical centers- ( research/ education)
Schools – educational and vocational training
Allocate land for agricultural purposes – food security
Community centers – cultural exchange
Business centers – to network and conduct trade/ business
Affordable Homes- to reduce rural migration to the urban centers
John Babara Foundation, Inc. will be the primary project development manager. Its subsidiary – Pearl Investments, L.L.C. will be incorporated as a private utility company in Burkina Fasso. It will be offering energy, water, waste disposal and waste management infrastructure that will be paid in fees by the homeowners using different financial instruments.
The fee structures will be detailed after the feasibility study is complete upon input from the local citizens and government as well. It will subcontract Domes for the World given their international experience in construction of dome homes.
Other subcontractors will be sought to complement and make the project a long term success which could be replicated globally. We believe the project addresses the energy needs by offering alternative renewable energy in a unique way, while simultaneously addressing the housing and developmental needs. The local citizens will be trained to be employed in the project. A branch will be opened in Ouagadougou to manage the country project with a country president to handle different regions being developed.
Funding estimates will be determined after a feasibility study is done within 2008. After the first phase, we expect to use the carbon credits from the reforestation and alternative renewable credits to fund a portion of the 2 second phase. This will supplement other funding options.
The goal is to generate excess energy that can be sold to the govt. and exported to neighboring countries to increase our revenue. Funds generated from the sale of organic fertilizer’s produced from recycled waste will be reinvested into the next phases as income source to reduce the debt level. Income from exported recyclables will be reinvested into the project as well.
Estimated construction materials like cement and iron bars will be imported in the short run where possible and eventually produced to meet the project needs. Local labor will be trained and employed through technology transfer. This will be helpful in the maintenance of the communities.
John Babara Foundation, Inc. is 5 years old with headquarters in Connecticut, USA. Our mission is to offer sustainable eco-projects for economic development globally. We will seek internationally experienced organizations like Domes for the world, Critical habitats and others.
